RGS Training - Valuing and managing veteran trees

In December 2015 Robert Yates attended and successfully completed the advanced course for trainers in 'Valuing & Managing Veteran Trees' (as devised by the international Vetree Project and delivered by the Ancient Tree Forum)

Robert Yates will be begin delivering the one day introductory course in Valuing & Managing Veteran Trees during 2020. Courses will initially be run subject to demand.

Locations can be arranged to suit; if you have access to or are responsible for a site with ancient or veteran trees, the course can come to you. Otherwise, we will provide a suitable site with appropriate facilities.

Delegate numbers are limited to a maximum of twelve; minimum of five (the latter being best suited to courses delivered to the staff of a specific landowner or management company at their own site).

Objectives:
When you have completed this course you should be able to do the following:

  • 1. Give a definition of a veteran tree that is of importance for biological or heritage value
  • 2. Explain why trees can live so long
  • 3. Describe how and where roots grow and why they are important
  • 4. Undertake a simple survey of a veteran tree in the field
  • 5. Assess where management is likely to be appropriate for old trees or their surroundings

Programme

  • 9:30 - 10:15 - Introduction and presentation of course leaders and delegates
  • 10:15 - 11:15 - Definition of a veteran tree and their value for cultural history and biodiversity
  • 11.15 - 11.40 - Coffee/tea break
  • 11.40 - 13.00 - Field visit to look at veteran trees
  • 13.00 - 14.00 - Lunch
  • 14.00 - 15.10 - Importance of roots and the management of the land around veteran trees
  • 15:10 - 16:10 - Management of veteran trees exercise and an introduction to pruning, including a coffee break
  • 16.10 - 16.30 - Protection, legislation, questions and summary of course

Cost
£ 105.00 + Vat per delegate
